This distinctive Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter of Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 was equipped with a Telefunken-designed Peil Gerat IV electronic radio direction finder, one of the first airborne interceptors of its kind to be mounted in a Luftwaffe night fighter.
The Peil G IV was more of an on-board direction finder than an actual intercept radar and featured a new display in the cockpit that required the pilot to hold a needle covered in luminous paint in the center of the display and he knew that if he held the needle in this central location, his aircraft was on its way to the detected aircraft.
Although still relatively primitive, this system allowed the pilot to control his plane and perform the intercept, rather than being busy constantly checking his heading, something that helped pilots of single-seaters tremendously. Although the Peil Gerat IV did not actually work that effectively, it provided valuable research data for use in future projects, which would eventually lead to the introduction of much more suitable systems.
