NSU, now merged with Volkswagen and Auto Union, has been busy for several years developing the new mid-size sedan K70, which should fill the gap between the Ro80 and the smaller NSU models.
The car was stillborn, because Volkswagen pulled the plug in 1969, probably because the K70 no longer quite fitted into the model portfolio of the new group (the K70 would internally compete with the VW 411 and the Audi). Just before the project was halted, however, some official photos appeared of the 4.41 m long car with its 2.69 m wheelbase and planned 90 hp 1.7-litre engine from NSU. The K70 promises to be as progressive as big brother Ro80.
When it is announced that VW has cancelled the K70, many people are up in arms. Why did VW keep the very outdated 411 in production at the expense of the modern NSU K70? In Wolfsburg, the people are not deaf to this criticism and in 1970, the K70 definitively goes into production as Volkswagen.
It was Volkswagen's first model with a water-cooled engine and front-wheel drive. The original design was by Claus Luthe, who also designed the Ro80. In addition to a 1.6 litre, 75 hp engine, a 1.8 litre, 100 hp four-cylinder was also available. However, the K70 never became a sales success and in 1975, after 211,127 units, production ceased.
